Specification of Letters Patent.

Devices; and I do hereby declare the follow ing to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in railways, and particularly to means for preventing trains running past danger signals.
The principal object of the invention is to provide a simple device carried between the rails of a railway which is adapted to be set to trip a valve carried by the train pipe of the air brake system to empty said train pipe for application of the braces.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent from the following description when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a diagrammatic .view showing my train stopping system. Fig. 2 is an enlarged elevation of the track carried device showing the connections with the semaphore. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the track carried device and the train pipe loop. Fig. 1 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view through the track carried device.
Referring particularly to the accompanying drawings, 10 represents an engine which has the train pipe 11 of the air brake system provided with a rotary valve 12. This valve is suitably disposed on brackets below the engine and is provided with a trip arm 13. The train pipe 11 has a forward loop 11 extending across the front of the engine and provided with one of the valves 12 in each end so that one of the valves will be sure to strike the top, whichis to be hereinafter described, when the train is proceeding forwardly or backwardly. Mounted between the tracks is a housing 15 in the upper side of which is provided an opening 16 through which is slidably disposed a vertically movable plunger 17 The lower end of this plunger is pivotally connected to one end of a lever 18, said lever being pivotally suspended centrally from a depending bracket 19. The other end of the lever 18 is connected to one end of a spring 20 which has its other end connected to the housing. The spring 20 normally rocksthe lever 18 so that the plunger 17 is withdrawn within the housing. Arranged below the spring carried end of the lever 18 is a double-grooved pulley 21 around which passes the two cords or cables 22 and 23, these cables being connected at one end together and to one end of a cable 21 which extends through a conduit 25. This conduit leads from the housing 15 to the signal station 26 where it is connected to one end of a hand lever 27. Located above the point of connection of the cables 22, 23 and 24 is a ledge 28, and slidably mounted on this ledge is a block 29. Connected at its opposite ends to the block and to the adjacent end of the housing is a spring 30. Connected to the other side of the block is the other end of the cable 22, while the other end of the cable 23 extends upwardly and is connected to the spring carried end of the lever 18.
Thus when the cable 24 is pulled, the lever 18 will be rocked on the bracket19 and cause the plunger 17 to be projected above the housing sufficiently farto be struck by the arm 13 on the. valve 12, while theblock 29 is drawn under the lower endof the plunger to hold the same iii-elevated position. When the lever 27 is released or moved in the opposite direction, the spring 30 will withdraw the block 29 from beneath the plunger 17 and permit the spring 20 to move the lever into normal position, withdrawing the plunger into the casing. The spring 30 returns the block to its normal position pulling the cable 22 with it.
The housing and signal are located close to each other. The cable 241 is connected to the semaphore arm 31, so that when the arm is thrown up into danger position, the plunger 17 will be projected through the top of the housing. Should a train attempt to run past the danger signal, the valve 12 will be swung open by the engagementof the arm 13 with the plunger 17 opening the train pipe to the atmosphere, and causing the air pressure therein to be exhausted. This would apply the brakes and bring the train to a stop in time to avoid an accident.
What is claimed is The combination with an air valve carried by a train in the air brake system, of a housing located between the rails of a railway, a pivoted lever mounted in the housing, a plunger pivotally connected to one end of the lever, a spring connected to block and the other to the lever, and a [rocking the lever to project the plunger the other end of the lever and to the housing for holding the plunger normally Withunder the plunger.
