Description

G. ,P. HORAN.
TRAIN STOP.
APPLICATION FILED FEB- 9, 1921.

WITNESSES INVENTOH 6504 65 P//P.4/v
1 A TTORNEVS m Za M UNITED STATES GEORGE PAUL HORAN, OF RUTLAND, VERMONT.
TRAIN-STOP.
Application filed February 9, 1921.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, GEORGE P. HORAN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Rutland, in the county of Rutland and State of Vermont, have invented a new and Improved Train-Stop, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to improvements in train stops, and more particularly to improved means for automatically causing the stopping of the train if it attempts to pass a dan er signal.
A fhrther object is to provide improved means for opening the air line of the air brake system of a train or other vehicle, so as to automatically apply the brakes and stop the vehicle if it attempts to pass a danger signal.
With these and other objects in view the invention consists in certain novel features of construction, and combinations and arrangements of parts as will be more fully hereinafter described and pointed out in the claims.
The accompanying drawing is a view partly in elevation and partly in vertical section illustrating my improved train stop mechanism.
1 represents a locomotive or other similar vehicle having an air line 2 with an air cock 3 and a relatively broad lever 1 constituting the handle of the air cock 3 and depending therefrom.
While I have illustrated in dot and dash lines a locomotive, it is obvious that my invention is not limited to the particular vehicle as it is adaptable for any vehicle in which an air brake system or similar brake controlling means is utilized.
5, 5, are the rails on which the locomotive runs and between these rails a pit 6 is provided in which a housing 7 is secured. A tubular bearing 8 is provided in the upper portion of the housing 7, through which a plunger rod 9 has vertical movement, and a head 10 is located on the upper end of the plunger rod 9 and is adapted when the rod 9 is elevated, to be positioned so as to be struck by the lever 41 and cause the movement of the lever 1 to open the air line and apply the brakes. A link 11 is pivotally connected to the lower end of the plunger rod 9 and supports at its free end a weight 12 which serves to return the parts to normal lowered position.
Specification of Letters Batent.
Patented. Oct. 18, 1921.
Serial No. 443,640.
A bell crank lever 13 is pivotally supported in the housing as shown at 14 and is connected at one end to the link 11 as shown at 15. This bell crank lever may, of course, be operated in various ways to control the position of the plunger rod 9, and I have shown as an operating means a semaphore arm 16 which is connected by a wire or cable 17 with one end of the bell crank lever 13, and between said arm 16 and the lever 13 the wire 17 is passed around a pulley 18. The semaphore arm 16 may constitute the ordinary signal arm in common use on rail roads supported in elevation on a suitable standard 19 so that when the semaphore arm is operated by any suitable mechanism, not shown, it will cause the movement of the bell crank lever 13 to control the operation of the plunger rod 9.
The operation is, therefore, as follows: When the semaphore arm 16 is moved to its elevated or dangerposition, the bell crank lever 13 will be swung on its pivot 14: through the medium of the wire or cable 17 and force the plunger rod 9 upwardly so that the head 10 is in the path of the lever i controlling the cock 3 of the air line 2. When the locomotive or other vehicle reaches the danger position, the lever at will be moved to open the air line and apply the brakes. When the semaphore arm 16 falls, the weight 12 connected by the link 11 with the plunger rod 9 will return the parts to normal position.
Various slight changes might be made in the general form and arrangement of the parts described without departing from the invention, and hence I do not limit myself to the precise details set forth, but consider myself at liberty to make such changes and alterations as fairly fall within the spirit and scope of the appended claims.
I claim:
1. The combination with a vehicle having an air line thereon, and a valve arm controlling said air line, of avertically movable plunger adapted to be positioned in the path of movement of said arm and cause the opening of the air line when the vehicle passes the same, a weight, and a link suspending the weight from the lower end of the plunger and operating to return the plunger to its lowered position when permitted.
2. In a train stop, the combination with a housing adapted to be located between the rails of the track and having a guide hearing in its upper portion, of a plunger rod vertically movable in said bearing a head on the upper end of the plunger rod, a link pivotally connected to the lower end of the plunger rod, a Weight suspended at the lower end of said link, abell orank lever supported in the housing and connected at one end to the link, and means for moving the bell crank lever to cause the plunger rod to be moved into and out of operative position.
23 in a a housing train stop, the combination with adapted to be located between the rails of the track and having a guide bear- 15 ing in its upper portion, of a plunger rod vertically movable in said bearing, a head on the upper end of the plunger rod, a link )ivotally connected at its upper end to the lower end of the plunger rod, a Weight on the lower end of said link, a bell crank lever supported in the housing and connected at one end to the lower end of the link, a standard, a semaphore arm on the standard, a pulley, and a flexible connecting device connecting the arm and bell crank lever and passed around the pullev.
GEORGE PAUL HORAN.
