Fixed-abutment type.-In a rotary engine having outwardly-sliding vanes, the packing-strip at the line of contact between the cylinder and pistondrum is retracted, to allow the vanes to pass, by steam pressure in the working chamber entering grooves r, s on the periphery of the drum just in front of the vanes. Pressure in these grooves overcomes springs, one of which is shown at l, and lowers the packing to clear the vanes.
