Abstract

12,322. Boult, A. J., [Jones, J. T.]. June 6. Rotary metallurgical furnaces or kilns.-An inclined rotating cylinder or kiln supplied with producer gas at its lower end, and with air towards its upper end, is used in the roasting and reduction of iron ores. The kiln 8 abuts against the exit flue 4 from the producer 3, and is provided with an extension 10 opening into a stationary hopper 11 ; air-supply pipes 12 open into the extension. A hopper 14 is provided to introduce bituminous fuel into the kiln to assist in dephosphorizing the ore. The reduced metal and earthy constituents of the ore fall into an airtight pit 17.
