Abstract
12,172. Young, W. H., Lyon, O. B., and McCarty, L. C. June 4. Swimming-appliances.-In swimming-appliances of the type comprising a buoy adapted to be strapped to the body and provided with adjustable propelling-means, the buoy 2 is provided with a keel 4 to which the propeller shaft 12 is adjustably secured, and pumps 23, 24 enable water to be pumped into or out of the buoy to vary its buoyancy, an air valve being provided to permit air to escape from the buoy when necessary. The hand-cranks and bevel-gearing are carried by a slide 19 adjustably secured to the keel 4 by means of a set-screw 20 ; the rear end of the shaft 12 is carried by a telescopic hanger 13 provided with a set-screw 22. The shaft 12 is also telescopic, the two parts being secured together by means of a set-screw 21. Guards 17, 18 are attached to the buoy. The wearer may be supplied with air from the buoy through a check valve 16 and pipe 15.
