Abstract

11,885. Roth, C. June 11, 1907, [date applied for under Section 91 of Patents &c. Act, 1907]. [Patent of Addition to No. 6738, A.D 1908.] Elastic-fluid turbines.-End pressure in turbines is balanced by means of a number of dummy pistons, and suitable packings are so arranged that the dummy pistons and the packings are subjected to only a part of the total pressure. The packings may be placed at the high or low pressure end of the turbine or at both ends. In the form shown in Fig. 1 the intermediate space s is connected by a pipe to the space between the two packings o', o<2>, and the interior of the turbine communicates with the condenser space k. The annular surface between the diameter d' of the rotor and the packing o<1> forms one dummy piston, and the surface between the packings o<1>, o<2> forms a second dummy piston. In other forms of turbine described the interior of the drum is connected to the condenser or to the space between the first stages of the turbine. Reversing turbines are also described with one packing at each high-pressure end, Fig. 6, and also with packings for each turbine similar to that shown in Fig. 1. In the turbine, Fig. 6. the interior of the drum is connected to exhaust pressure, and packings at the high-pressure ends are used. On the nozzle ring between the two velocity stages c, c<2> a packing e is used comprising a number of ledges 9, 9<1>, 9<2>, Figs. 10 and 11, coacting with ledges 8, 8<1>, 8<2> on the rotor. The ledges may be caulked in or otherwise fixed to their supporting- members, or may be formed in one therewith. Similar packings may be used for the blades. In one form of turbine shown an overload valve is used to pass steam to the second stage directly from the steam-pipe.
