Abstract

8274. Dike, D. W. April 14. Milk pails; appliances for use in milking animals. -Various forms of milk - pail attachments are described by which the pail can be supported upon the knees during milking, and to which the handle of the pail is attached. In one form, a flat plate of metal is cut twice approximately to the centre line, dividing one half into three parts, the centre one being bent up and provided with a large hole in which the handle works, the others being bent down and riveted to the pail. Instead of providing a hole for the handle, the top of the centre part may be rolled and twisted at right-angles to the lower part. In a second form, a part of the plate to be attached to the bucket is bent down, the ear being stamped from the other part and bent upward. In another form, the ear is formed at the top of the plate which is attached to the bucket, the lower part being bent up into an horizontal position. The fourth form is similar to the last described, but has the lower part of the plate pivoted on a pin, which is carried in the rolled edge of the part attached to the bucket and is fixed by compressing the roll at one point. A stop is provided on the lower part to prevent it from passing the horizontal position. The form shown in Figs. 13 and 14 is similar to the last-mentioned, the plate 6, which carries the ear 3, being bolted to the pail and provided with a slot 22, through which the head 23 of the plate 5 passes, when in one position and when one of the stops 25 is bent. The head 23 and stops 25 press downwards upon the rim of the pail so that the plate 5 cannot pass the horizontal position. When the handle is allowed to drop in the hole 11, it presses upon the head 23 and raises the plate 5. The device may be made of wire or rod of round, square, or other cross-section. A loop forms the rest for the knees, the ends being twisted together or placed parallel to form a neck, whereon the handle is pivoted and then spread horizontally and pressed flat to be attached to the pail. Instead of the loop and neck, the wire may be bent as shown in Fig. 19, the flattened ends 17 being attached to the pail, the parts 18 forming the knee-rest and the centre part 21 forming the spindle whereon the handle 9 is pivoted.
