Description

Dec. 11, 1951 comGA 2,578,462
MILK CAN PUNCH Filed July 11, 1947 ATTD RN EYE Patented Dec. 11, T951 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 1 Claim.
This invention relates to an implement for punching holes in milk cans or similar containers for other liquids.
An object of the invention is to provide an implement of the type described, which can be applied to cans of different sizes and having a base 1 part and an adjustable punching part.
The punching part has a clean uniform opening in the can adjacent the rim thereof in such a position that the milk is less liable to coagulate.
The base of the device holds the can secure during the punching thereof, so that the can cannot slip during the operation.
With the above and other objects and advantages in view, the invention consists of the novel details of construction, arrangement and combination of parts more fully hereinafter described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevational view of an embodiment of the invention as applied to a can;
Figure 2 is a front elevational view of the de- Vice with the can removed;
Figure 3 is a top plan View with the can shown in dotted lines positioned on the base and Figure 4 is a detailed sectional view partly in elevation, showing the manner in which the opening in the can is made.
Referring more in detail to the drawing, the reference numeral IE! designates an embodiment of the invention which will be referred to as a milk can punch assembly.
The assembly comprises two parts, a can engaging part II, and a punching or perforating lever part l2.
The can engaging part I l comprises a substantially triangular shaped base plate 13 which, at the two base angles thereof, is bent upwardly to form vertical can engaging ears or clips I4 and I5 respectively.
The apex of the plate I3 is bent upwardly to form the vertical upright or post Hi. When a can is positioned on the base plate 13, the ears Ill and i5 and the uprights l6 retain the can I! on the base plate without danger of the can slipping therefrom during the punching operation.
Milk cans usually come in two sizes, a small size and a large size. For this reason, an opening i8 is provided in the upright l6 which will be located in such a position that it will be immediately above the rim of the small can, while an opening IS in the upright will be located in such a position that it will be immediately above the rim of the large size can,
The lever part l2 forms a hand grip portion or handle 20, and a punching prong 2| on the forward end thereof, which is bent at an angle to the portion 20.
The prong 2i is of a size to be received in either of the openings [8 and I9, so that when a can is positioned on the plate I3, and the lever I2 moved upwardly to a position as shown in Figure 4, the prong 2| will punch an opening or hole 22 in the can ll adjacent the sealed or rolled rim 23 thereof.
The size of the hole or opening in the can depends upon the upward movement of the lever [2.
It is believed that from the foregoing description, the operation and structure of the device will be apparent to those skilled in the art, and it is to be understood that changes in the minor details of construction, arrangement and combination of parts may be resorted to, provided they fall within the spirit of the invention and the scope of the apppended claim.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new and desired to be secured by Letters Patent is:
In a milk can punch, the combination which comprises a can supporting frame, L-shaped in cross section, having a horizontally disposed base with a vertically positioned upright extended upwardly from one side of the base, said base having can positioning clips on the edges and said upright having an opening in the upper end positioned to be spaced above a large can of milk and an opening in the intermediate part positioned to be spaced above a small can of milk, and a punching lever having a handle with a downwardly sloping prong at one end and said prong positioned to extend through one of the openings of the upright to punch an opening in a milk can positioned on the base of the said frame.
