Abstract
7605. Matter, J. April 6. Washing.-Textile materials impregnated with lye in mercerization are delixiviated and the lye is recovered by repeatedly and alternately passing the material through a counter-current of washing fluid and steaming it. The apparatus used comprises a chamber a, with a sloping floor b, subdivided into a number of cascade compartments d, d' . . . d<6> by double vertical partitions, of which one part c extends to the bottom and the other e does not. There are also two large partitions which dip into the liquid in the end compartments d<6>, d ; they extend to the top of the chamber a, and form, with a cover s having an hydraulic joint r, an air-tight chamber A within the other chamber a. The material t coming from the mercerizing-machine passes over a roller u into the first compartment d, under a roller therein, over a roller g in the chamber A, and so on, in zigzag fashion through each compartment d<1>, d<2> . . . d<6> until it passes out through squeezing-rollers n, o. As the material passes out of each cascade compartment, one side comes in contact with an horizontal steam-pipe v, perforated on the side nearer the material, and, immediately after, the other side touches an horizontal rod w. The positions of the next pipe v and rod w are reversed with regard to the side of the fabric that each touches. Each pair, pipe and rod, is so placed that the material is stretched between its components. The steam from the pipes v removes the lye from the material, and the rods w strip it off so that it falls into the cascade compartments. Finally, a powerful waterspray from a pipe z acts on the material just before it passes through the squeezing-rollers n, o. This water flows into the last compartment d<6>, and, mixing with the lye there present, flows into the next compartment d<5>, and so on, the lye getting more concentrated as it passes down the cascade counter to the travelling material, the concentration being regulated by the amount of the water sprayed from the pipe z. The chamber A being air-tight, the lye is stated not to become carbonated, so that it can be drawn off, say from the compartment d<3>, for bleaching purposes, or from the first compartment d, d<1> for mercerizing.
