Typewriters.- For case shift, the platen frame 3 is movable vertically by means of a rocking frame 5, upon a rail 6 of which runs a roll 7 of the platen frame. A temporary shift key 8 in the front bank of keys is pivoted at 10 so that its arm 11 coacts with an -arm 12 of the frame 5. A key 14, preferably in the next to the rear bank of keys, rocks the frame 5 similarly to the key 8, but is provided with a pin 16 which, when the key is depressed, engages beneath a dog 15 and locks the platen in its upper case position. The dog 15 is secured upon a spring- controlled rod 17, upon which also is a cam-arm 20 placed so that depression of the key 8 enables a pin 19 to rotate the rod 17, whereby the dog 15 releases the key 14 and the platen returns to its lower case position. The dog 15 may be similarly released from the key 14 by a key 23 in the front bank of keys, which is pivoted to the key 14 at 21, is limited in its movements by ears 24, 25, and has a camportion 27 adapted to engage with a pin 28 to rock the dog. The key 23 serves also as a temporary shift key in the same manner as the key 8.
