Abstract

5780. Love, W. March 14. Paper and wood tubes are made by passing strips or ribbons of wood, strawboard, paper, &c. independently through configurating dies or formers, and then through assombling and finishing dies, the longitudinal and transverse joints being staggered. The strips are coated with an adhesive and dried prior to passing them through the dies, and veneer is previously soaked in a solution of caustic soda or other alkali. Fig. 1 shows the general arrangement of the dies for producing a corrugated moulding ; dies for tubular articles would be of segmental shape. The strips are drawn from rolls g through shaping-dies b, c, d, thence through an assembling-die e and a reciprocating drawing-die h, shown also in Fig. 4. The jaws of this die are closed to seize and draw the material by cams t, r, actuated by levers s connected to cross-heads u, which, with the whole die, are reciprocated on tappet guides v. The jaws may be mounted as described in Specifications No. 3210, A.D. 1906, [Abridgment Class Fabrics, Dressing &c.], and No. 7526, A.D. 1907, [Abridgment Class Buildings &c.]. The shaped product then passes through a steaming or damping-die, a drying die k, a cooling-die, and a reciprocating finishing and embossing die similar to the die h. The reciprocating die may act alternately or simultaneously, The dies are removable from their frames, which can be fixed at convenient intervals on the girders a, The strips may be supplied as shown in Fig. 6, and be wrapped around a core x reciprocated longitudinally. The core may be formed in two lengths, which, when separated, permit the finished moulding &c. to be cut off in the gap.
