Abstract

5416. British Thomson-Houston Co., [General Electric Co.]. March 10. Carbon.-In making so-called "metallize i " carbon filaments for electric lamps, squirted cellulose threads are impregnated with a solution of a volatile inorganic substance such as a metallic chloride before being carbonized, and are then strongly heated, flast ed in benzine or a similar vapour, and again strongly heated in a known manner. Preferably a 0À15 per cent solution of sodium chloride is used to impregnate the threads, but chlorides such as t ose of potassium, barium, and calcium may be employed. The filaments may be heated in an electric furnace, while packed in flaked graphite in graphite boats, a temperature of about 2000‹ C. be ng necessary to " metallise " them. The resulting filaments are regular in section, free from spots and blisters, and have a positive resistancetemperature coefficient.
