Abstract

5592. Voelker, W. L. March 16. Incandescent lamps.-Carbide filaments, such as are described in Specifications No. 6149, A.D. 1899, and No. 11,344, A.D. 1900, are now made by soaking a thread of carbonizable material in a solution of a chloride, acetate, cyanide, or other readily-decomposed salt or organic compound of uranium, titanium, zirconium, beryllium, thorium, or like metal, drying it, and baking it at 400‹ F.; the thread is ammoniated if a salt of a mineral acid has been used. The thread is carbonized by packing it with charcoal in a crucible, which is heated to a high temperature while coal gas or gaseous hydrocarbon is passed through the materials. The filament is then mounted in bulbs the space in which is freed from oxygen, and may contain vapour of the metal or a salt of the metal used, and the filament is heated nearly to fusion by passing current through it. The thread or filament may be soaked in the salt solution at any stage in the manufacture.
