Abstract

5320. Niemann, F. A. March 9. Typewriters and like machines.-In printing adding- machines means are provided whereby the automatic filling of ciphers to the right of any digit printed may be optionally prevented, so that the listing can be divided into two or more columns without lateral shifting of the paper. The main lever 66 actuated by the keys 76 positions the type-sector 40 and sets forward the tail-piece lever 39 so that its curved slot 38 engages the comb-piece 37 actuating the corresponding U-bar 88 and hammer pawl 89, releasing the type-hammer 90 and resetting it after printing. Hooked clips 42, 43 are attached to the tail-piece levers 39 so as to overlap the next lower lever and cause the simultaneons forward movement of all levers to the right. To prevent the automatic filling in of the ciphers, a crank-piece 58 has a forked arm 59 which shifts the clip 42 pivoted to the tail-piece lever 39. The clip 42 has two hooks, one hook 60 engages the heel-piece 61 attached to the lever of the next lower order, the other hook 62 engages the forked arm 59 and passes under and contacts the hooked olip 43, which is rigidly secured to the tail piece of the next higher order. The arm 59 is rotated by the connexion member 23, the tip 25 of which rests on the cam 28 secured to the inner end of one of the shafts that terminate in the knobs 20, 21, 22. The knobs 20, 21, 22 may be turned through one third or twothirds of a rotation to cut out either the second or third, the fourth or fifth, and the sixth or seventh, order lever respectively. On giving one-third of a rotation, the hook 60 is brought over the notch 63 in the heel-piece 61, thereby freeing the lower lever interrupting the cipher transfer. The hook 62 is still in engagement with the hooked clip 43 but on a further rotation to two-thirds, the hook 62 is entirely out of engagement and will interrupt the transfer between the lever operated and the next higher level. At the same time the hook 60 and restores the transfer connexion. The knobs 20, 21, 22 are held in position by the springs 34, 35, 36. The member 23 is made up of two parts 29, 30 each having a tip 31 projecting into a slot 32 in the other. A spring,33 keeps the parts together ; if the upper part 29 is moved the lower part 30 will have a corresponding movement, but, if the crank-piece 58 has a direct actuation from the tail-piece lever, the lower part 30 only is moved. By the operation of more than one knob, two or more parallel columns may be printed, each of the desired width.
