Abstract

4637. Wagner. F. March 16, 1907, [date applied for under Section 91 of Patents &c. Act, 1907]. Traction engines and road locomotives; motor road vehicles.-A road train carries on the leading vehicle a prime-mover which operates a dynamo generating electricity, which is transmitted by means of conductors to electric motors on succeeding vehicles, all the axles of which can swivel and are driven in such a manner that equal tractive efforts are given to each wheel. An electro-magnetic braking system controlled from the leading vehicle is also provided. The leading vehicle carries the motor m and dynamo g, and following vehicles A carry electric motors e which receive power from two main leads 1, 2, starting from the dynamo and extending throughout the train. Each vehicle is connected with the fore-carriage of the next by a pole d, and the speed of travel is regulated by a rheostat r in series with the dynamo. The electric motors e which drive each wheel are of the series type used in the steepest part of their characteristic curve so as to give practically the same tractive effort for a considerable change in speed, As an alternative arrangement, one electric motor is used to drive a differential countershaft which transmits the motor through chains to the driving-axle. The front and back axles of each vehicle are coupled crossways with each other by rods Z, as shown in Fig. 2. For braking, an electro-magnetic switch controlled from the leading vehicle and shown in Fig. 7 is provided. The bipolar switch u is operated by solenoids I, II so that, in the position shown, the field J only receives current from the leads 1, 2, while at the same time a resistance W is switched into the armature circuit and the motor works as a dynamo. In the other position of the switch, the field J is in series with the armature and the resistance W is cut out. For assembling the vehicles A &c. together, flexible conductors are led from the dynamo to the vehicle to be brought up.
