Abstract

Closet basins; flushing. - When the flushing- valve 15<a> is turned on, water is delivered by a pipe 14 to an air vessel 8, and to a chamber 4 and flushing-rim 6 by a perforated pipe 16<a>. The water enters the vessel 8 through an opening 10 in a compartment 9 in which it seals the end of a pipe 11. Air is forced out of the vessel through a pipe 12 to an air-lock 3 formed by inverted U-shaped passages A, B, and C, D. At the same time, water passes to the basin from the rim 6, and when the bowl is sufficiently full, the cock 15<a> is turned off. The locked air then returns along the pipe 12 and escapes into the outlet D by the pipe 11, thus setting up siphonic action. The vessel 8 finally drains off by a small passage 13. As the water rises in the basin, it ascends a passage 18 connecting the chamber 4 and the basin, and compresses air in the trap 17, keeping back the water in the chamber until the cessation of siphonic action, when it forms an after-flush.
