2122. Claypoole, W. Jan. 30. Samples furnished under Section 2 of Patents &c. Act, 1907. Formaldehyde compounds.-A material which may be used to replace celluloid, jet, ivory, horn, and bone in the manufacture of fancy articles is made by heating formaldehyde with phenolic bodies in the presence of an accelerator which does not cause separation of a watery layer, for example caustic soda, or sodium carbonate, cresolate, carbolate, &c. The accelerator may be omitted during the first part of the process, or an acid accelerator may be used ; but during the subsequent hardening process, an accelerator is always present in order to diminish the period of heating. The material may replace ebonite and other insulating-materials in the electrical industry.
