Abstract
2118. Dyson, H. K. Jan. 30. Sleepers.-A concrete reinforcing truss or expanded bar, for railway sleepers &c., is formed by slitting diagonally the web of the bar shown in Fig. 3, the flanges at the ends being then raised on opposite edges of the bar, so that the diagonals C, Fig. 8, at one end are inclined in the opposite direction to those at the other end. One half span only is shown in Fig. 8. The central portion of the bar may be left plane, or crossed diagonals may be formed as shown. The ends of the bar are cut obliquely before expansion, to prevent overhanging at the ends of the truss. The inclination and spacing of the slits may be varied. In a modification, the slits are inclined in opposite directions towards the ends, and the flange on one side only is raised at both ends. Specification No. 2119, A.D. 1908, [Abridgment Class Metals, Cutting &c.], is referred to.
