Abstract

1361. Meredith, C. A. Jan. 20. Springs.-Ordinary elliptic springs of vehicles, such as automobiles, have the lower half 5 formed in two parts, the inner ends of which are secured by bolts 20 in sockets formed at the lower ends of levers 17, which are pivoted at 19 to a sleeve 10 mounted on the axle 9 and have their upper ends 12 mounted upon a bolt 13, which is fitted with springs 15, 16 in the manner shown. The springs 15 are compressed during the flattening of the elliptic spring, while the spring 16, which is weaker than the others, serves to retard tha recoil of the elliptic spring. In modifications, the levers may be pivoted to ears formed integral with the axle, and the auxiliary springs may be arranged below the axle.
