Abstract
1179. Thompson, W. P., [Akt.-Ges. fiir Landwirtschaftliche Maschinen vorm. Geb. Buxbaum]. Jan. 17. Baling presses.-In straw presses in which the compressing piston moves in a curved path, special means are provided for operating the binder coupling and for actuating the piston, which is of special construction. The coupling connects the binder shaft w<1> with the spur-wheel z<4>, which is connected by spur gearing with a shaft w driven from the thrashing-machine. The binder comes into action when the edge k<2> of the pivoted lever s is moved out of engagement with the edge k<1> of a cam operating the coupling. The lever s is actuated by the engagement of a roller r<1> with a cam disk a<1> on a shaft w<3>, the cam being constructed and actuated in such a way that the lever s is returned into the position shown, to disconnect the coupling, while the shaft w<1> is making one revolution. The shaft w<3> carries a toothed wheel, with which the straw engages as it moves forwards in the press. This wheel causes a partial rotation of the disk a<1>, the latter part of the revolution being effected by the engagement of a roller h with an eccentrically-pivoted lever f linked to the needle shaft w<2> by a rod d and arm u. The shaft w<2> is rocked by a crank a on the shaft w<1> connected to it by a rod b and arm c. The toothed wheel is loosely mounted on the shaft w<2>, but is thrown into engagement by a clutch, sufficient play being allowed to admit of the partial rotation of the shaft by means of the lever f &c. When the clutch.is moved out of engagement with the toothed wheel, it engages a fixed bearing so as to prevent rotation of the shaft w<3>. Figs. 10 and 11 show the rocking piston, which is composed of a number of strips A strung on continuous. bolts B. and held-apart by distance-pieces or eyelets.. It may be rocked about its pivot M by means of a crank and connecting- rod or a cam disk &c. actuated by a continuously rotated shaft extending across the press.
