Abstract

139. Raschig, F. June 6, 1907, [date applied for under Section 91 of Patents &c. Act, 1907]. Hydrazine is obtained by the action on chloramine or a hypochlorite of much larger quantities of ammonia than are employed in Specification No. 22,957, A.D. 1907, the operation being performed in the cold. The yield is greatly increased by addition of compounds which increase the viscosity of the solution, such as a weak solution of cane-sugar, dextrose, lµvulose, mannite, lactose, glycerine, formaldehyde, starch, dextrin, gum arabic, albumen, casein, gelatine, isinglass, or ordinary glue. By the application of heat, the quantity of ammonia necessary may be reduced. In an example, three litres of concentrated ammonia, to which have been added 12 c.cs.. of 5 per cent solution of glue, are added to one litre of sodium hypochlorite solution ; heat is applied, the excess of ammonia is driven off, and the hydrazine precipitated as sulphate.
