UNITED STATES PATENT} OFFICE.
SAMUEL BUTTERMAN, DE MADISON, WISCONSIN, ASSIGNOR 5130- UNITED STATES OF AMERICA.
PROCESS OF MAIQUFACTURING WATERPROOF ADHESIVES.
No Drawing.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, SAMUEL BU'I'IERMAN, a citizen of the United States, residin at Madison, in the county of Dane and tate of Wisconsin, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Processes of Manufacturing Waterproof Adhesives of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to the manufacture of waterproof adhesives which remain for relatively long periods without setting,
that is, remain in a workable condition. It is well known that in most waterproof adhesives as now prepared setting or gelat-ion takes place in a short time, usuall within one or two hours after the adhesive has been prepared.
One of the objects of my invention is to overcome the instability which is usual in the preparation of glues. An adhesive prepared in accordance with my invention will remain stable and in a workable condition for a long period.
In carrying out my invention, I use by weight approximately one (1) part casein, one and five tenths (1.5) to two and elg t tenths (2.8) parts water, fifteen thousandths (.015) parts h drmn oil, fifteen hundredths (0.1mm, h drated lime, depending on the purity of the llme, a esser percentage being required when pure lime is used and a greater percentage when the lime is of inferior quality, mixed in ninety hundredths (:90) rts, i fgrfian seventy hundredths'(.70) silicate 0 S0 21- To prepare an adhesive Wqancemth my invention, the ingredients specified may be combined in the following manner: The oil is first mixed with the dry casein. This 40 may be done by spraying the casein with oil.
Specification of Letters Patent. Application filed August a, 1918. Serial No. mass.
Patented Jan. 14, 1919.
1 i and the water and lim are intro uced. After a few minutes t e silicate of soda is added and the stirringis continue rom twenty minutes to one half hour, until a smooth uniform texture free from lumps obtains. The adhesive is then ready for use.
As the function of the oil is a mechanical one, added for the purpose of allowing the dry casein to be handled without incon- .venience and increasing the flexibility of the dry glue layer, I mayuse various kinds of oil. I have found, however, that kerosene or parafiin oils give good results.
It should be noted that the proportions of the ingredients used by me are stated approximately and that I do not limit myself to the proportions named aS they may be varied considerably without affecting unfavorably the results obtained.
What I claim is:
1. A composition of matter comprising by weight approximately one (1) part casein, two (2) parts water, fifteen thousandths (.015) parts oil. fifteen hundredths (.15) parts powdered. hydrated lime, mixed in ninety hundredths (.90) parts water, and sggenty hundredths (.70) parts silicate of s a 2. The herein described method of preparl Examiner
