Winches. - Relates to self-sustaining winches, particularly applicable for raising arc lamps, of the kind in which the initial motion of the handle withdraws pawls &c. on the drum from engagement with a fixed ratchet-wheel, and comprises a modified construction and arrangement of parts. The flanged drum a is loosely mounted on a fixed spindle c, and is provided on one side with socket guides, in which slides an open framing fitted with a pawl f. Within the framing is arranged a boss l, provided with a square hole to receive the winch handle and having a pair of arms p, p<1> adapted to engage the side of the framing. When the load is being hoisted or lowered by means of the handle, one or other of the arms p, p<1> moves the framing to the right against the action of a spring g, and releases the pawlf from the ratchet or other teeth in the casing or cover. If the operating-power is withdrawn, the spring forces the pawl f into engagement and sustains the load.
