Stuffing-boxes. -Relates to packing-devices for the steam-inlet and wateroutlet pipes of steamheated cylinders, such as the drying-cylinders of paper-making machines, calendering-rolls, &c. The steam pipe a<1> is secured to a casting b<2> connected to the steam supply, and rotates in a box a secured to the cylinder. The packing - rings e<1>, e<2>, e<3>, e<4> are held in place by a flange b<1> on the pipe a<1>, and are held in contact axially by a spring i acting between an adjustable collar g on the pipe a<1> and a disk p, which may form a plain rubbing joint with the box a, or may run on ball bearings. The water-outlet pipe b may be stationary, and may be screwed into a suitable outlet socket in the casting b<2>, or may rotate in a packing-box j, as shown. The packing, which allows universal motion, is held.in a liner, and is pressed axially by a spring adjustable in tension by a screw m. Leakage may be detected by removing a plug o. According to the Provisional Specification, the inner tube b may be packed in a manner similar to that employed for the outer tube, and in a modified arrangement, the flange b<1> is replaced by a ring secured in the casing a by set-screws, and the spring i acts directly on the packing.
