Abstract

27,301. Rittmeyer, F. Dec. 10. Water levels, indicating.-In apparatus for indicating water levels at a distance electrically, a float m in the water moves a contact-arm e and varies the length of a resistance f in a circuit containing a coil l of a differential galvanometer, the other coil of which is in a circuit containing an adjustable resistance h at the distant station. The circuit containing the resistance f, the line-wire a, and the coil is connected to the battery g in parallel with the circuit containing the resistance h, the coil l<1>, and the line-wire b. Variations in the resistance of the line-wires are thus eliminated. A contact-arm j, moved along the resistance h either automatically or by hand, indicates the liquid level on a scale o when the galvanometer needle points to zero. The arm j, Fig. 2, is moved by clock-work, which is controlled by electro-magnetic brakes r, r<1> in an auxiliary circuit containing the galvanometer needle and contacts p, p<1>. The arm is rotated in opposite directions through a differential gear w, y, according as the needle makes contact with one or the other of the contacts. The auxiliary circuit may be provided with a shunt circuit in order to prevent sparking at the contacts. The shunt circuit is completed through a contact upon an armature arm s.
