Abstract

21,302. Taylor, G. F., and All Speed Gear Syndicate. Sept. 25. Driving-mechanism.-Relates to variable-speed gearing for cycles &c. of the kind in which planetpinions are connected by one-way clutches with their hubs, which hubs carry pins engaging an adjustable eccentric cam. The driving-spindle a in the bottom bracket of the cycle carries arms g<1> carrying the hubs x connected to the planet-pinions y by free-wheel clutches f. Other arms g<1> may be connected together by rivets o. The hubs carry pins m engaging a circular track j carried by a ring i which is pivoted on a stud k moving in a slot in the frame. A cam p bearing on the stud k is adapted to be rotated by a wire, chain, or rod, as shown in Fig. 3, so that the eccentricity of the track j and thus the velocity of the driven sunwheel, gearing externally with the planet-pinions, are varied. When two planet-wheels only are used, they may be so placed that the gear increases at the beginning of the downward stroke of each pedal.
