Abstract

20,919. Bell, J. D. Sept. 20. Gas engines, igniting in. A magneto for use chiefly with internal - combustion engines from which a current can be obtained at starting without rotating or oscillating the running armature, is provided with an additional armature or keeper to deflect the magnetic flux and cause a current to be generated in the running armature. Fig. 2 shows an ordinary magneto fitted with extensions to its poles D, between which a deflecting armature B can be oscillated or rotated to cause the magnetic flux to cut the conductors in the running armature A and generate a current in them. A spark is produced by oscillating the outer portion O of the contact-breaker shown in Fig. 4, which is normally stationary, through the eccentric L fixed on the spindle K and the link M. This link is pivoted to the arm N, which can be gripped at any point in its length by the clip R fixed to the portion O of the contact-breaker and provides a variable adjustment. Or a separate contactbreaker may be mounted on the spindle K, the circuit remaining closed at this point except when the deflecting armature B is rotated. In a modification, the deflecting armature takes the form of a rotatable cylindrical shield partly surrounding the armature ; or a keeper which can be moved up to or away from the ends of the field magnets is employed.
