Gagging-appliances.-A mouthopening gag fitted with a tonguedepressing a p p l iance is shown in front view in Fig. 1 and in side view in Fig. 2. A support 1, with a portion 2 conforming to the shape of the palate, is fitted with sleeves 4, which are free to slide down the arms 3 but are prevented from moving upwards by spring bolts 5 and teeth 6. To these sleeves is fixed the arm 7 bent as shown to fit the lower gum. Between the parts 8 is secured an inclined plate on which the tongue-depressing device 11 may slide, being guided by a slot 13 and stud 14 until locked by the engagement of a pin 15 on the elastic plate 16 with a hole in the tongue-depressing device, and of a projection on the depressing- device with a slot in the inclined surface. In use the bearing-parts 2, 9 are brought together, introduced into the mouth with the part 2, against the palate and the part 9 over the lower gum, and are then separated by drawing the arm 7 downwards ; the tongue-depressing device 11 is finally slid down the inclined surface until locked. For removal, the pin is released by pressing the plate 16, and the depressing device 11 is slid upwards and lifted off ; a pull on the handles 20 releases the bolts 5 so that the arm 7 is forced upwards by the closing of the patient's jaws.
