AUGUSTUS s. van HOUTEN, or NEWARK, NEW JERSEY,
ARTIFICIAL DENTURE V.application led December To aZ-Z whom t concern:
Be it known that l, AUGUSTUS-3S. VAN Henman; a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Newark, in `the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Artilicial Dentures, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to the construction of attachments for fastening removable den tures to natural teeth.
Some of the objects of my invention are: first; the construction of an eflicient connection between a bridge; plate or similar device containing artificial teeth and a clasp or other removable means of attachment to a natural tooth; second, to join an artificial denture with a natural tooth in such manner that the denture may be readily and completelyremoved from the mouth; third2 to form a flexible attachment betweenv an artificial denture and a natural tooth and fourth, toconstruct the connection between an artificial denture and a naturalxtooth in such manner that the denture may have the necessary vertical, lateral; rocking7 and angular movement with respect tothe natural tooth that is desired to prevent Stress being placed on the natural tooth and may have proper contact with the gum. Y
With these and other objects` in view, one embodiment of my invention is shown in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective of a conventional representation of the gum of the lower jaw with an artificial denture on one side connected to the natural teeth and with the denture on the opposite side omitted;
Figure 2 is a perspective of a fragment of an artificial denture showing the location ona tooth on said denture of a part of the connecting means;
Figure 3 is a perspective of two parts of my connection shown separately and independently of a tooth and an articial denture' Figure 4 is a vertical Section through my device and a part of the artificial denture;
Figure 5 is a Section on line 5 5 of Figure 4;
Figure 6 is a perspective showing the clasp and a modified form of connection and Figure 7 iS a section Similar to Figure 4 showing a modified form of connection and omitting the artificial denture.
In Figure 1 of the drawings there appears i, 1923. serial No. 678,013."V f
a part of the representation of Va kconyentional lower Jaw and gums ,l such as are commonly used in illustrating the construction and use of artificial dentures. f Thejaw shows natural teeth 2 and an artificialfden- "tureB having teeth l therein. One-half orf-the artificial denture having a` lingual 'bar 5 to be used to connect the two parts of the denture together lwhen the denture is :complete is illustrated; one-half `being omitted to show the construction and position of vthe connection. The part of the denture omitted. from Figure 1 is indicatedl fragmentary in Figure 2. Attached to a clasp 6 comprising the' usual band 7 and a cusp 8,iifwa Vcuspbe desired, is a plate 9. any desired manner as by soldering or casting. This plate is` flat, relatively thin and rectangular in shape and has at the lower end thereof and integral, therewith; a hook 10 spaced ,from the plateand extending upward parallelwith the `face thereof. ariectangular, relatively thin, hollow member( 11 havinga slot 12 infone-side thereof and with one end open until the two parts of the connection are joined, is soldered, cast7 or otherwise attached to astrip or plate of metal constituting a part of the artificial denture. The parts of the connection are attached together to be used by lSliding the hollow member over the hook and then bending up at a right angle to the plane of the hollow memberand part lllof said hollow member, as indicated in Figures 4 and 7.
in theform of connectionshown in Figures 6 and 7 the hook and the plate form a hinge. This hook 15 instead of being an integral part of the plate is attached thereto to form a hinge. The hinge is constructed by forming at the bottomr of the plate9 an eXtension'curved to adapt `it to beinserted in two openings 17 in the hool. The hook, therefore; swings on1 an axisv 18 made yby the narrow piece of metal between the two openings. The hook may be attached to or removed from the plate dueto the opening between the end of the curved extension and the part from which it extends.
The construction and manner of using my device will be apparent from the description given and the drawings referred to. The clasp part may be properly fitted to the tooth and the plate may then be attached thereto in the desired position. The artificial denture may be fitted to the gum and This plate may be` attached in;
the attaching member may be properly adjusted. The two parts when completed4 may then be joined by inserting the hook-into the hollow rectangular member and then closing the opening in the rectangular member by `bending up the extension of one of the sides thereof as indicated.
-Having described my invention what I olaimas newanddesire to protect Letters Patent is:
v"lf An attachment for artilicialV dentures a plate atta'fchedv to means re-A Y connected-with anatural tooth and tenda an upturned hook at one end of said plate and axhollow member attached to a enture body andadapted to form a movable connection with said hook.v
An attachment for artificial dentures comprising afplate attached to means removably*v connected with a natural tooth and having'a hook at one end of said plate, said hoolf'spaced awayY from said plate and eX- upward parallel withthe tace of jate anda hollowY member having a `slot"ii"one sidev thereofv attached to a denture body and adapted ytoto-rma Vmovable connection with saidhook.
attachment for artificial dentures prising a plate attached toy means ref having "a hinged hook at one end oi said Vplate,saidn hook spacedfaway from said platev and- 'extending upward parallel with the 'faceof'saidplate and a hollow member having a Vslot lin ione side thereof attached touafdenture bodyl and adapted to form a connection with said-hinged hook.
i bIn anartiiicial dent-ure a denture body and meansto attach said body to a natural toth'comprising a clasp having a hinged hook attachedfthereto, whereby said hook niaymbe'" moved angularly with respect vto the face oi; saidclasp, said' denture body Y clasphavi'ng a hinged hook attached thereto,
blyconnected with a natural tooth and said hook having the point thereof of greater diameter than the shank thereof, said point being substantially rectangular andhaving the corners rounded whereby rocking move- Vment between the clasp and the denture is formed, said denture body having a slotted hollow member attached thereto, said hook being adapted to form a sliding connection with said hollow member andl meansto fasten said hook and said hollow member together.
6. A device of' the character described,
consisting of means to connect an artiiicial.
denture to a natural tooth, said means comprising a removable member on said tooth,
a hook attached to saidl member, said4 hook spaced away from and extending upwardV andrmeans to'fasten said-hook and said hol-V low member together.
7. A device of the, character described, consisting of means toconnect an artificial denture to a natural tooth, said means comprising a removable member on said' tooth, a hinged hookV attachedvto said member, said hinged hook spaced away from and eX- tending upward from`the bottom of said member, said hinged hook having a narrow shank and enlarged head, said head being substantially rectangular and having the corners rounded, a slotted hollow member attached to saidartiiicial denture adapted to receive. said hinged hook therein to forma slidable, and rotatable ,connection between saiddent-ure and said tooth and means to fasten said hinged hook and said hollow member together.
8; An attachment for an artificial denture comprising a hollow slotted member and` hingedl hook member secured to lsaid slotted member. Y
In testimony whereof I aiiix my signature.
