Axle - boxes. - A dust-guard and oilretainer for the axle-boxes of railway and tramway vehicles and particularly for that type of axle-box described in Specification No. 3696, A.D. 1906, is placed in a chamber 2 at the end of the axlebox, and comprises a packing-sheet 7 of leather &c., which is pressed into contact with a smoothed surface 6 by a recessed metal plate 9. Within the plate 9 and encircling a collar 8 on the sheet 7 are placed two split, wedge-shaped rings 11, 12 of rubber, wood, &c., which are compressed by a U-shaped. wedge 13 mounted on two bolts 15. The wedge engages an inclined surface 16 formed on the wall 4 of the chamber 2, and is adjustably tightened by means of nuts screwed on the bolts 15 and bearing against a plate 17. The sheet 7 and plate 9 are made rectangular to prevent rotation. In a modification, two wedges are inserted in the chamber 2 from above and below and engage each other, being drawn together by bolts.
