Abstract

17,656. Skill, E. C. Aug. 2. Card games.-A device for shuffling playing- cards, shown in end elevation in Fig. 3, consists of a box having its ends A shaped as shown. The upper parts E of the sides are hinged to the lower parts and are formed with an horizontal ledge G of sufficient width to hold half a pack of cards, which are kept from sliding off by a bead H. A spring I is fixed to the outside of the hinged part and supports at its upper end a coiled spring K and a slide L. The slide is of metal and is pressed by the spring K against the upper edges of the cards when they are in position. The box is fitted with a double top P, the lower part of which, shown in Fig. 5, is pierced with two s!ots N for the reception of the slides L. The double top contains a wedge-shaped draw-plate Q attached to a rod R. A metal eye S, attached to the rod R slides along a second rod T on which a spiral spring U is threaded. This spring is compressed when the rod R is withdrawn and returns the draw-plate when the rod is released. A spring catch 0 holds the sides E in position when closed, and a spring wound round the hinges throws them open when the catch is released. In operation, the cards are placed in position and the sides E are closed. The rod R is gradually withdrawn, causing the draw-plate to force the slides outwards and gradually release the cards, which fall into the bottom of the box. The bottom is hinged and secured when closed by a spring catch. Fig. 6 shows a simplified form of the device. The two side pieces C are hinged to a framework A, and are fitted with ledges F for the reception of the cards. The springs J are shaped as shown and are withdrawn by hand. The cards fall into the frame which arranges them in a compact heap ready for use.
