Abstract
17,521. Wolffenstein, R., and Boeters. O. Aug. 3, 1906, [date applied for under Patents Act, 1901]. Nitrophenolic compounds are manufactured by treating aromatic hydrocarbons with strong nitric acid in the presence of mercury or its salts, whereby the nitro and phenol groups are simultaneously introduced. For example, picric acid is prepared by heating benzene with nitric acid and mercury nitrate, and separating the picric acid from the nitrobenzene simultaneously formed by means of alkali. The Specification in the original form as published under the Act of 1901 comprises also the preparation by the above-described process of nitrophenol, trinitrocresol, mononitrohydroxybenzoic acid, chlornitrophenol, nitronaphthols, nitrohydroxyquinoline, hydroxynitroanthraquinones. This subject-matter does not appear in the Complete Specification as accepted.
