Abstract

Elastic-fluid turbines.-End thrust in a parallelflow turbine is balanced by dividing the casing into a series of longitudinal compartments by partitions, the direction of flow being reversed as the fluid is made to pass from one chamber to the next. Figs. 1 and 2 show a diagrammatic part sectional plan and elevation of such a turbine. The casing A is divided into compartments by partitions b<1>, b<2>, b<3>, b<4>, through which the shaft e passes. This shaft carries a sleeve e<1> provided with rings e<7> working in grooves in the partitions. These rings may be replaced by rings on longitudinal extensions of the rotor sections e<2>, e<3>, e<4>, e<5>, e<6> at their peripheries. Steam enters through the port C and passes successively through the various conduits and compartments a<5>, a<7>, a<4>, Fig. 1, a<8>, a<3>, a<9>, a<2>, Fig. 2, and a<10>, a<1>, Fig. 1, to the exhaust D. The direction of flow is thus reversed from chamber to chamber, but the blades are arranged so that a common direction of rotation is imparted. Where the number of chambers is odd, the unbalanced end thrust due to the odd rotor section is neutralized by securing an annular ring f<1> to one extremity of a rotor section, thereby diminishing the pressure area of that extremity, the pressure area of the other extremity remaining the same. The conduits a', a<8>, a<9>, a<10> may be formed integrally with the main casing A, as shown, or separate external channels may be employed.
