Abstract

15,701. Bird, G. July 8. Spring wheels; slipping, preventing, attachments to wheels for; wheels with two or more rims or tyres side by side.-Wheels of the kind in which inner and outer rigid rims are separated by coiled springs arranged radially and tangentially are characterized by the mounting of the radial springs a, Fig. 1, between pairs of plates b, c, secured alternately to each rim so that one end of each spring is free to slide. The side plates g are formed with dished springy tongues h, and are connected by bolts passing preferably through the plates c which form abutments for the tangential springs e. Each radial spring may be formed of a strong and weak helical spring placed end to end. In the form shown in Fig. 7, two rims C are used, formed with outer spring tongues g only, and with inner flanges g<3> connected by pinsj engaging pairs of radial and tangential slots j<1> allowing limited relative motion. A packing-ring k is fitted. In the form shown in Fig. 9, a non - slipping iron tyre l is mounted between tyres, and is supported by radial springs m only, seated between plates n. Circumferential motion is limited by stops q fitted to all the members. Thin plates r enclose the whole, inner spring plates o keeping the tyres in place. Fig. 11 shows a wheel with a non-slipping tyre (not shown), in which one side is supported by a removable flange B' secured to a disk B<1>.
