Moulding earthenware pipes, retorts, &c.-Pipe extrusion machines are provided with means for forming the pipes socket-end uppermost to avoid the necessity for subsequent inversion. Clay is forced from a container c by means of a plunger band passes between the socketing-die d and cores k, m, which are carried by sleeves q, r loosely mounted upon a rod s. Slots are formed in the sleeve r and rod s to receive a cotter t which supports the cores k, m in their operative positions, as shown in Fig. 6. The barrel w of the pipe is first formed, and after a sufficient length is extruded the plunger b is raised and engages with a flange x formed on the sleeve r, raising the core m; this in turn raises the core k and with it a piece k<1>, which forms the interior of the socket and also severs the pipe from the material in the container c. The die d is formed in two portions, which are separated to release the finished pipe. As shown in Fig. 6, the sleeve q may be dispensed with, the core k sliding loosely upon the sleeve r. A loose hoop y prevents the slot in the rod s from being filled with clay.
