TILE-MACHINE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented April 30, 1907'.
Annlication filed Tune 22,1906. Serial No. 322,933.
To all 1.0710110 H Hamil/0070067721.
Be it known that I, Lo'aon O. BURNI-IAM, a citizen of the United States, residing at Clare, in the county of Clare and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tile-Machines; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to new and useful improvements in tile making machines and isdesigned more particularly as an improvement over that form of machine granted to me May 241, 1.904, and numbered 760,678, and my object is to produce a machine of this class whereby drain tile, sewer pipe and the like may be formed of plastic material and the tile after being formed handled while in a green state.
A further object is to provide means for adjusting the several parts of my device whereby the product of the machine will be perfectly true.
Other objects and advantages will be hereinafter referred to and more particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings which are made a part of this application, If igure 1 is a perspective view of my improved machine. Fig. 2 is a top plan view thereof. I ig. 3 is a central vertical sectional view. Fig. *1 is a horizontal sectional view as seen from line 4-4 3, and, Fig. 5 is a detail sectional view through the machine as seen from line 5 5 Fig. 3.
Referring to the drawings in which similar reference numerals designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, 1 indicates the base of my improved machine, said base comprising crossed arms, to each of which is secured a standard 2, said standards being secured to the arms of said base by means of bolts 3, or the like, and being perfectly formed of one continuous piece oi metal, the horizontal portions 4. thereof forming a seat for the auxiliary base 5, said base being preferably constructed in a single piece and secured to the standards 2 in any preferred way as by bolts 6.
A cylindrical core 7 is centrally disposed upon the auxiliary base 5 and is secured thereto by a cap screw 8. Surrounding the base ofthe core 7 and at a distance therefrom is a ring 9, said ring being secured to vertil cally disposed bars 10, the upper end of said loars being secured to a ring 11 which sur- I rounds the upper end of the core 7 and at l the same distance therefrom as the rings 9. The lower ends of the bars 10 are reduced to l form bolts which are threaded and disposed through slots 10 in the auxiliary base 5, nuts 10 being disposed upon the threaded ends of the bars 10 above and below the base 5 so that one or all of the rods may be raised orlowered to properly adjust the rings around the core 7.
A collar 12 is disposed around the core 7 l and is adapted to move longitudinally there on, said collar being disposed in the space between the core 7 and bars 10 and is longitudinally moved on the core by means of arms 13, said arms being secured at one end to the collar 12 and at their opposite end to a crosshead 14, the ends of said cross-head being disposed between the respective arms of two of the standards 2, said standards serving as guides for said cross-head. The cross-head 14 is raised and lowered through the medium of an operating lever 15, said lever being pivotally secured to one of the arms of the base 1 by means of links 16, the inner end of the operating lever being iivotally secured to the cross-head 14 in any yrcferred manner as by eyebolts 17. A cylindrical shell or casing 18 is disposed between the bars 10 and the core 7, said shell being preferably formed of sheet metal or the like and of greater diameter than the core 7 so that a space 19 is left between the core and easing into which is adapted to take the plastic material from which the tile or like is made. The shell 18 rests upon the collar 12, and when the collar is elevated on the core 7 through the medium of the lever 15, the shell 18 and plastic mate rial therein is elevated above the core 7 after which the casing and tile contained therein is removed and set away to dry.
In order to more readily convey the plastic material into the space 19 between the shell 18 and core 7 I provide a cylindrical hopper 20, said hopper being pivoted at one side to a shelf 21, said shelf extending laterally from the ring 11, the outer end thereof being supported by means of a brace 22 extending from the shelf and secured at its lower end to the ring 9.
hen the plastic material is deposited in the hopper 20 should there be more than i enough to fill the space 19, the hopper is swung to one side on its pivot point 23 and rests over the uniform edge to the upper end of the tile and of a at the same time removing the hopper an'd contents thereof from over the tile and casing, so they may be readily removed from between the bars 10 when desired.
operation the shell 18 is disposed between the bars 10, the lower end thereof resting upon the collar -12 after which the hopper 1s swung over the casing and the plastic material deposited in said hopper and after the space between the core has been filled the hopper is swung to one side and over the shelf 21 when the outer end of the lever 15 is directed downwardly and the casing 18 and the tile therein elevated above the ring 11 'when the casing and tile are removed therefrom and stored away to dry. Another casing is then placed in position and the operation above described repeated.
It will now be seen that I have provided a very cheap, durable and efficient device and one wherein the tile may be handled while of the same.
What I claim is:
l. A machine of the class described comprising a base, standards 011 said base, an auxiliary base secured to said standards, a core on said auxiliary base, bars disposed around said core from, means to secure said bars in position around said core, a shelf at the upper end of said bars, a hopper pivotally secured to said. shelf, a casing between said bars and surrounding said core and means to elevate said casing whereby the plastic material may be removed from the core.
2. A machine of the class described comprising a base, standards secured to said base, an auxiliary base on said standards, a core on said auxiliary base, a plurality of bars surrounding said core and at a distance thereom, a ring at each end of said bars, a casing and at a distance therei I 1' I r I shelf 21 thereby forming an 1 removably disposed between said bars and than the core whereby plastic material, a shelf at the upper end of said bars, a hopper pivotally secured to said shelf and adapted to rest thereon when the plastic material is being removed and means to elevate said casing and the plastic material therein.
3. A machine of the class described comprising the combination with a suitable molding device, of a shelf secured thereto and a hopper pivotally secured to said shelf and adapted to be disposed thereover when desired.
4. A machine of the class described comprising a base, standards on said base, an auX- iliary base, a core secured to said auxiliary base, a collar surrounding said core and longitudinally movable thereon, a casing surrounding said core of greater diameter than said core, means to said casing around the core, arms integral with said collar, a cross-head at the lower end, of said arms an operating lever pivotally secured to the central portion of said cross-head, links disposed between said operating lever and the base and pivotally secured thereto, and means to adjust said casing with respect to said core.
5. A machine of the class described com prising a base, standards on said base, an auxiliary base having slots therein, a core secured to said base, bars around said core, rings on said bars, the lower ends of said bars being threaded and disposed through the slots in the auxiliary base and nuts on said bars to raise and lower the same whereby the rings may be alined with the core.
In testimony whereof I have name to this specification in the two subscribing witnesses.
LORON O BURNHAM.
