Abstract

12,833. Powell, D. T. June 3. Platen presses; feeding sheets.-Relates to automatic sheet-feeding and delivery means for platen presses described as applied to a machine of the kind in which the forme is carried on an oscillating frame such as the ' Gordon.' The sheets are fed from a table M, raised as the sheets are removed by ratchet and screw gearing, to rollers Q, 0 by friction disks K prevented from rotating during their forward movement by a ratchet. The disks K are actuated from any moving part by suitable means, such as the chain H. Knives N prevent the removal of more than one sheet at a time. The sheet passes between the rollers Q, O and is conveyed to the platen P by four sets of endless tapes Y, y, Z, z; the set Y passes from the roller Q, beneath the rollers R, X, over the platen, around the roller T, and over the roller R to the roller Q ; the set y around the rolls Q, R ; the set Z from the roller O, beneath the roller R, over the face of the platen, and around the rollers U, g, V, W to the roller O; and the set Z around the rollers O, S, W The tapes are driven intermittently by a friction surface t on the crank-disk E which engages a friction disk e, and a belt f. The sheet is positioned on the platen by stops i, formed with recessed ends which bridge the tapes and carried by a spindle j oscillated by a cam on the shaft D. Frisket fingers l on the spindle m, operated by a cam on the shaft D, hold the sheet on the platen. After an impression, the stops i and the frisket fingers are lifted, and the tapes again operated by the surface t to deliver the sheet between the rollers U, T on to the table h. In order that the platen may be accessible for making ready the rollers U, T, spindles m, j and the pivot x of the levers n, o, for operating the stops and frisket fingers, are carried by a frame u pivoted on studs w, which may be turned into the position shown in dotted lines, the tapes Z being kept taut by a spring- controlled roller V. The sheets may be fed by hand to the rollers Q, O from a suitable feed-board. The platen P may be stationary, but is preferably pivoted so that it can be turned up for making ready.
