Wood, treating.- A wooden foundation for veneering is made from small and waste pieces a, b, Figs. 2 and 5, placed with the grain in different directions and connected by tongues d to junction pieces c, the whole being surrounded by a frame f. The joints are glued and the edges of the members fluted to reduce the weight. In a modification, shown in Fig. 5, a closet seat or the like is built up of members cut from planks, as shown in Fig. 7 ; in this case, the outer frame is omitted. For stout structures, the 'form shown in Fig. 8 is adopted, consisting of two layers of boards or waste pieces r glued to battens p ; the joints are staggered, and, to prevent warping, the boards are rabbeted and cross-cut at r<1>, p<1>. The whole is then covered with several layers of veneer with their grain crossing. The invention is applicable to doors, partitions, ceilings, panelings, furniture, decorations for ships' cabins, signs, blackboards, telephone cabinets, portable buildings, boathouses, &c.
