Abstract

8153. British Thomson-Houston Co., [General Electric Co.]. April 8. Driving machines by electromotors.-Relates to a control system for two motors employed to drive a printing press at different speeds. Ooe motor C is connected through reducing gear and the other larger motor B is connected directly to the driving shaft A, and a source of variable voltage, such as a motor-generator F with means for varying the current in the field winding f, is employed. The change from the motor C to the motor B is effected, without altering the voltage of the generator, by connecting it in series with but in opposition to the armature of motor B across the supply mains E. The speed is then increased by diminishing the voltage of the generator and may, if desired, be still further increased by adding its voltage to that of the supply mains. The motor C is connected to the shaft A through a magnetic clutch D, and may be permanently connected to the generator F so as to run idle during the operation of motor B in-readiness to take up the load. A reversing switch J and controlling switch H are provided.
