Abstract
8088. Cummings, R. A. April 6. Reinforced concrete ; girders and beams -A reinforcement for concrete structures, particularly applicable to girders, consists of several longitudinal bars 1, 5, Figs. 1 and 2, connected together on the site in two planes by means of clips or bends 7 and transverse rods 9 passed through the clips. To accommodate various sizes of the rods 1, sheetmetal strips 10 of angular cross-section are inserted through the clips ; or the bars 9 may be square and are turned, when inserted, so that the diagonals lie transversely to the two sets of bars 1, 5. The bars 1 are preferably looped at the ends, and the loops are bent upwards to take the shearing-stresses. The reinforcement is maintained in its correct position in the concrete by forming the clips with tongues 14, Fig. 5. In the modification shown in Fig. 8, a bent clip is slotted at the top, the piece 21 being turned by pliers to grip the bar.
