Engraving.-Relates to the preparation of steel dies used in the production of mills for forming the design on fabric-printing rollers. A zinc or other metal pattern plate having the design on a larger scale is prepared by hand punching, by producing the design photographically and etching, by embossing between two rollers, or by other means. The plate thus obtained is placed in a pantograph machine, and the design is reproduced on a steel die or roller on a reduced scale by means of a punch, such as that described in Specification No. 14,709, A.D. 1900. The punch is provided with an adjustable weight and may be operated twice. The steel die is employed in the usual way to produce a mill from which the printing-roller is embossed or engraved.
