Surfacing and polishing.-Needles, knitting-pins, and other tapered and cylindrical wire articles are polished and scoured in a rotating drum, in which is rotated at a slower speed a vane which extends the length of the drum and reaches nearly to its inner surface. The needles &c. are placed along with emery and oil, or other substances suitable for the operation to be performed, in a barrel a, Fig. 1, mounted in bearings in standards c. The barrel is made air-tight by a cover b, Fig. 3, secured by bridge-pieces b<1>, which are forced into engagement with lugs a<1> on the barrel by screws b<3> which engage the bridge-pieces and abut against the barrel. The barret is so filled that the replacement of the cover puts the contents of the barrel under pressure. A central shaft d, the cylindrical ends of which project through stuffing- boxes a<3> and glands a<4>, carries on its square central portion an egg shaped vane e, which reaches nearly to the inner surface of the barrel. The vane may be made integral with the shaft or it may be hollow, the interior space being filled with resilient material f to allow the vane to yield diametrically when it meets an obstruction. The drum is driven at a high speed by a chain gearing with a sprocket-wheel g. The shaft d is driven frictionally and its speed is reduced to any required degree by a friction brake. A boss m<1>, keyed to the end of the shaft d, carries forked arms m against which abut spiral springs k arranged round a guide-ring l. The ring l is supported by, and the other ends of the spiral abut against, arms h<1> carried by a drum h loose on the shaft d. Friction is applied to this drum by a band device, or by a' block adjusted by a screw. The shaft may be driven directly from the drum by toothed gearing, the ratio of which may be varied to' obtain different speeds. Arrangements may be made for feeding oil or other lubricant to the materials in the drum.
