Abstract

4590. Newton, P. A., [Dresdner Chromo-und Kunstdruckpapierfabrik Krause & Baumann]. Feb. 25. Paper, coating and colouring.-Paper is evenly and smoothly coated with colours for forming variegated paper, and chromo and art printing- paper by the apparatus shown, which allows thick colours to be applied and so facilitates drying, and in which only smooth surfaces are used so that the apparatus can be easily cleaned. The paper is passed from a roll a<1> over guide-rolls b, c, and then between two rolls d, f, which are ground truly upon each other and the distance between which can be regulated. The roll d is arranged in a colour trough e and rotates at a greater speed than the roll f, so that an accumulation g of colour occurs between the rolls, and the paper is coated by passing through this heap g. Owing to the difference in speeds of the rolls, any lumps in the colour are ground down and a uniform coating of colour is applied. In order to smooth down the colour, it is acted on by straight-edges or rollers h, i, carried by an adjustable block k which enables the edges to touch the layer of colour without pressure ; the edges &c. are reciprocated transversely by eccentrics l, m working in conjunction with springs n, o.
