Abstract

3889. Zinth, A. Feb. 16. Looms, pile forming and cutting in lays; reeds; beat-up motions; shuttle-races.-In a loom for weaving weft-pile fabrics, the pile loops are formed over longitudinal wires 3, which are raised and lowered in accordance with the design by jacquard leashes 25 or by healds, and the loops are beaten up over the wires on to rods 1, to which the wires are attached, by reed dents 6, which are moved forwards in succession from one side of the loom to the other, the necessary weft being drawn out of the shuttle. The rods 1 are provided at their front ends with knife-edges to cut the loops and are fixed to a transverse bar 2, and the rear ends of the wires 3 are attached to springs 4. Plates 8 pass between and guide the dents 6, and serve as a shuttle-race, and stationary shuttle boxes are used. The leashes 25 pass over a curved plate 10, and are drawn down by springs 11. The dents 6 have noses 7, and are provided with slots, through which the cotton or linen warps 5 pass. The dents are pivoted on a shaft 17, and extensions of the dents are guided by plates 16, 18. Studs 15 on the rear extensions of the dents are engaged by a curved slot in a traversing slider 12, which is guided by bars 13. The slider is traversed by means of a chain 20, which runs over rollers 26 and is driven by toothed wheels at the sides of the loom. To the chain is fixed a projecting piece 21, which engages a knob 22 on a handle pivoted to the top of the slider. The slider is thereby traversed to cause the dents 6 to be moved forwards in succession, until a projection on the handle runs over a pin at the side of a loom, thereby moving the handle against the influence of a spring to free it from the projection 21, so that the slider is stopped. Another weft is then inserted, and the projection 21 engages a knob on a similar handle at the bottom of the slider, which is thereby moved back across the loom. Springs 9 hold the dents at rest in their rear positions, and a lever 19, which carries a transverse rod for acting upon the dents, may be raised to prevent the dents from moving forwards when the weft in the shuttle is nearly exhausted, the means for driving the slider being put out of gear simultaneously.
