2367. Triwas, A. Jan. 30. Cigarette - making machines.- Relates to a hand-appliance for making cigarettes, in which the tobacco is moulded and pushed into a paper shell by a continuous operation, the working parts being guided by means of a case which also serves to prevent access of dirt. The tobacco is pressed between a fixed jaw 5 and a movable jaw 4 carried by a spring-controlled yoke 23 which is pivoted to a link 18. One end of this link is mounted in a slotted guide 20 pivoted to the case 2, while the other end is pivoted to a carriage 16 slidably mounted in a slot 17 on the underside of the table 1. The carriage 16 is operated by means of a slotted bar 12 pivoted at 40 to the underside of the table, an operating-handle 9 being slidably mounted in the slotted bar. Fig. 2 shows the appliance at the commencement of the operation, while Fig. 3 shows in dotted lines the yoke 23 in an intermediate position, and in full lines the parts when the tobacco is compressed between the jaws, the parts being guided in the manner shown by means of a guide 26 and rollers 25 attached to the yoke. The handle 9 is then moved forwards along the lever 40, carrying with it the stopper 30 which forces the tobacco into a paper shell fixed on the mouthpiece 37, and also a stopper 31 which releases the cigarette from the mouthpiece. The stoppers 30, 31 are adjustably mounted in a plate 34, which is laterally adjustable relative to the handle 9 by means of slots 35, Fig. 6; this adjustment is necessary when it is desired to vary the size of the cigarettes to be made, the jaws 4, 5 being replaced by others of the required size. The guide 26 is also adjustable according to the size of jaws employed. The jaw 5 is attached to a bar 6 by means of fixing - screws 8 and set-screws 7 which, on account of the holes in the bar and in the jaw being slightly out of register, force the jaw down on the table.
