()F DRESDEN, GERMANY.
CIGARETTE-MAKING MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 662,940, dated December 4:, 1900.
Application filed October 29, 1897.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Gnone ANTON J ASMATZI, a subject of the King of Greece, residing at Dresden, Saxony, German Empire, have invented certain new and useful Improvement-s in Cigarette-Making Machines, (for which I ain, No. 16,208, dated July 8, 1897; in Austria, No. 17/2,628, dated June 18-, 1897; in Hungary, No. 9,851, dated June 23, 1897; in Belgium, No. 130,250, dated August 24, 1897; in Italy, No. 88/26, dated June 26, 1897; in Russia, No. 2,694, dated June 30, 1897, and in Switzerland, No. 15,052, dated August 23, 1897,) of which the following is a specification.
The present invention has for its object a cigarette-making machine provided with a suitable system of levers which are operated by any desired means and their movement utilized, on one hand, for pressing down a movable cover or flap over the tobacco-channel or holder and, on the other hand, for the forward-and-backward movement of the plunger, as well as for pressing a fingerwhich holds fast the cigarette paper tube during the time that tobacco is being introduced into it.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 shows the device according to the present invention in elevation, Fig. 2 in plan, and Fig. 3 in rear elevation from the opposite side of the machine from that shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a cross-section on the line A B, Fig. 1, showing the channel open; and Fig. 5, a similar view showing the channel closed. Fig. 6 is a cross-section on the line C D, Fig. 3, showing the operating. device and the guide for the driver.
In the machine the tobacco is placed on a plate Z), arranged on the upper side of the frame, and from this plate is guided in sufficient quantity into the channel 0 the paper tube which is to receive the filling of tobacco being placed overproj ectin g tube 01. By turning the spindle e, which may be effected by hand by means of 'a lever f, as shown in the drawings by way of example, or by foot or mechanically, the hinged cover g is turned down, so as to form the tobacco in the channel into acylindrical roll. The latter movement must take place at certain definite intervals, for the channel must be closed benerial No. 656,794:- (No model.)
fore the interchangeable driver it penetrates into it and must remain closed during the time that the driver remains therein. For this purpose there is arranged on the spindle e beside a toothed segment i, by means of which the slide 70, carrying the interchange able driver 72,, is caused to reciprocate, a cam Z, on which rests a roller n, mounted at the end of a lever m. This cam Z is secured on the spindle'e. A key 0, Fig. 6, arranged on the hub of the cam Z, acts as a tappet for the toothed segment, which is loose on the spindle, the free end of said key engaging with a recess in the hub of the toothed segment i. As soon as the spindle e is turned toward the left hand side, as by the handle f, as seen from Fig. 1, the slide 70, with the driver h, also moves toward the left-that is to say, toward the channel cand at the same time the end of the lever m, pivoted at m, is raised by thecam I, said movement being communicated from the other end of the lever to the cam or pivoted lever 13, whereby the fiap g is caused to turn downward, so as to completely close the channel 0 into the position Fig. 5. Before the driver It penetrates into the channel 0, charged with tobacco and closed in the above described manner, the paper tube placed over the tube cl must be held fast. This is effected in a simple manner by means of a double-armed lever q, pivoted at g, on one end of which is arranged a finger T, which holds the paper tube as long as the other end, provided with a finger s, is pressed out by the rear side of the slide It.
In order to enable the finger r to hold the paper tube as long as desired, the length of the rear side of the slide 75 is made variable by means of an adjustable bar 25. This arrangement is advisable to allow cigarettes of different lengths to be manufactured.
The working of the machine is as follows: During the movement of the spindle e as the cam Z is secured to it the lever on is caused to move and the flap 9 is closed. Then as soon as the key 0 has passed the recess in the hub of the toothed segment e' the latter is caused to participate in the movement whereby the slide it, with the driver h, is caused to move, the lever q, with the finger 7', being also operated. When the spindle turns in the opposite direction, the channel 0 is open and the driver h is Withdrawn. The spring at on the part 9, the spring 7) acting on the lever 29 or on the lever m, and the spring 10 on the lever q must serve to return said parts into their positions of rest.
To avoid resistance to the entering driver h, owingto the tobacco becoming clamped in the channel 0 between the plate I) and the cover g, the front edge of the cover 9 and the opposite edge of the plate b are sharpened, so that when the cover g is closed the projecting tobacco-threads are cut off.
What I claim, and desire'to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In acigarette-making machine, the combination of a channel 0 and a hinged cover adapted to cooperate therewith, of a driver adapted to be reciprocated into and out of the said channel, a slide connected With the driver, a spindle, means intermediate the spindle and the hinged covervvherebyv the latter will be closed when the spindle is turned, a sector on the spindle engaging with and adapted to reciprocate the slide, and
means for effecting the operation of the sector from the spindle at a point in the turning movement of the latter after the cover has been closed, all as and for the purpose set forth.
2. In a cigarette-making machine, the combination of a channel a, and a hinged cover adapted to cooperate therewith, of a driver adapted to be reciprocated into and out of the said channel, a slide connected with the driver, a spindle, means intermediate the spindle and the hinged cover whereby the latter will be closed when the spindle is turned, a sector on the spindle engaging with and adapted to reciprocate the slide, and means for effecting the operation of the sector from the spindle at a point in the turning movement of the latter after the cover has been closed, a tube arranged to receive and hold a paper tube in position for receiving the tobacco from the channel, a two-armed lever q, a finger on one end of said lever adapted to hold the paper tube on its supporting-tube and a finger on the opposite end of the lever q adapted to be engaged by the slide as set forth, and for the purpose specifled.
3. In a cigarette-making machine, the combination of a spindle, the driverh, the slide thereof, and the toothed sector engaging with said slide, with a cam-disk Z, the two-armed lever m, a cam or lever 19, one end of which is adapted to be depressed by the lever m, the tobacco-channel c, and the cover g adapted to be closed by the other end of the cam or lever 19.
4. In a cigarette-making machine, the combination of a spindle, the driver 71, the slide thereof, and a toothed sector engaging with said slide, with a two-armed lever q adapted to be operated by the slide, the tube (1, a finger on the two-armed lever adapted to hold the paper tube fast on the tube (1, and
means for varying the length of the rear side of the slide, for the purpose specified.
In witness whereof I have hereto set my hand in the presence of the two subscribing witnesses.
GEORG ANTON JASMATZI.
