Application filed June 8,
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I. Gnonon EMANUEL lnvrno, a subject of the King of Great Britain and Ireland, and a resident of Batavia, Java, Dutch East Indies, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Cigarette-Making Machines (for which I have obtained a patent in Great Britain, lie. 150,582, dated the 11th day of December, 1919), of which the following is a specification.
My invention has for its object to pro vide a simple, efiicient, and cheap to manufacture machine for making cigarettes.
The invention is directed to the kind of cigarette-making machine wherein the tobacco is rolled in a band slackly monnted between fixed points, the band passing over a curved surface or table.
In devices heretofore proposed the table has been formed by a circular block having a curved surface and a handle pivotally mounted concentric with the axis of the arc of the curved surface whereby a roller on said handle traversed over a path parallel to the curved surface of the table, said roller, engaging beneath the band, rolling the tobacco by the action of the band on to the cigarette paper, which in turn was rolled round the tobacco, and stuck down by an ad hesive previously applied, until the formed cigarette rolled off the table. This arrange ment, however, necessitated a slight backward movement of the handle, at the end of its working stroke, to remove the grip of the band from ed the cigarette, to allow of the release of said cigarette.
Also according to another embodiment the surface of the table, which table was either movable or fixed, was struck from two centres with different radii, so that the roller, which was carried by a rotatable disc, compressed the tobacco as it approached the highest point of the table, wrapping the paper'round the tobacco and then, moving away from said table, allowed of the release of the cigarette.
In still another type of prior device the curve of the table was struck eccentric to the path of the roller, which roller was car ried by a double handle, the paper being fed on to the band by mechanical means actuated by the movement of said handle.
The present invention is characterized in that the peripheral surface of the table, which table is fixed, is formed by arcs of two Serial No. 476,015.
circles of different radii,'andthat the roller is carried by the H-shaped handle, so that saidroller, as it first approaches towards the highest point of the table, first compresses the tobacco into a roll, then rolls said roll on to the cigarette paper, which in turn is rolled round the roll of tobacco, and. finally, when reaching the'highest point of the table, moves away therefrom, releasing and ejecting thenowformed cigarette. For a clear understanding of the present invention, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying sheet of drawings, wherein: l
V Figure l is a side view, partly in section, showing three stages of the working of the improved machine.
Figure 2 is an end view thereof. Figure 3 is' a plan view. Like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
In carrying out my invention, 1 provide a base block a. between the ends a", c of which there is supported a band I) of any suitable fabric. This band Z) is normally slack, and is adjustably secured to the end a, of the block by'clarnping plate a kept down by thumb-screws 0 carried by a bridgepiece 0 spanning that end of the block a, whilst at the-end a of said block a the other end of said band 3) is fixedly secured thereto by clamping plate a and screws, said ends a, a being at different levels. Between the ends a, a of the base block a there is provided an upwardly curved operating table a the peripheral. surface of said table (6* being formed by arcs of two circles of different radii, and over said table 0* slackly takes the band 5.
The peripheral surface of the table is formed as above stated so that, after the rolled cigarette has reached the highest point of the table, said cigarette is released from the band, which becomes slack, by reason of the roller, carriedby the operating handle moving away from the table, instead of, as is the case with atable struck from one centre, necessitating a slight backward movement of the operating handle, to slacken the band and allow of the release of the ciga- .rette.
Pivoted at (Z and bridging the table a is an v l-shaped operating handle d, and between the arms of said handle there is rotatably mounted a roller 0Z the same taking beneath the hand 79, said roller d being set at such distance from the pivot (Z of the handle d that when the handle is moved to its verticle position, position indicated by reference numeral 2, Figure 1, said roller (Z is slightly above the highest point a of the table a but in. normal position and end position, reference numeral 3, of said handle d, said roller (Z is well clear of said table 03*.
The working of the machine is as follows :Handle (Z is pushed back till stopped by the upper ends of the bridge-piece c. The required quantity of tobacco c is placed on the band b and pushed down under the roller (P, the band Z) forming a pocket Z). Handle (2 is then moved forward in the direction of the arrow shown, the roller (Z in so doing carrying the band over the tobacco e eon pressingithe same and at the same time moving it along the table till it meets the cigarette paper e" at the point a placed on the upper surface of the band I).
Movingthe handle (Z to position 2 now rolls the paper 6 over the rolled tobacco closing down the edge of the paper, which edge has previously been damped in any suitable rnanner, forming a finished cigarette 6 Moving the handle (Z'-to position 3, releases the grip previously exerted on the band Z), which band 7), now at or about the point a becomes slack, allowing the cigarette e to roll down said band I) clear of the handle (5, whereupon said handle (5 is moved right back, and the operation repeated.
I claim A hand operated ciga1'ette-rnaking machine including a base, a fixed table having its peripheral surface formed by arcs struck from different radii a band ar ranged over the curved surface of the fixed table and having the ends thereof disposed at different levels at opposite ends of the CRLSG, means at opposite ends of said base or adjustably securing the band thereto said means at one end comprising a bridge piece and thumb screws for manipulating the sanie and at the opposite end comprising a clamp plate and clamping screws an t l-shaped handle pivotally connected to the table at a point below the, centers of the arcs and in vertical alignment with the highest point of said table, and a roller mounted between the arms oi the handle and engaging beneath said band.
In testimony whereof I have aiiixed my signature hereto this 10th of May, 1921.
GEGRGE EMANUEU IRVING.
