In making a c1garette the machine'` is 1 held in` the *left hand with the left thumb` under the split p1ate`=19 ,and against the channel member 18 and thefingers of the left hand against brake 21. The channel member 18 is then turned'away from the channel member 10 so asto leave the machine open. The ribbon is pushed into the channel member 10 by the -finger or any other suitable object and the required amount of tobacco spread evenly in the channel portion 10 on top of the ribbon. Channel member 18. is then closed. Both the extended ends of the split plate 19 strike the cam- shaped ends 11 and 12 leaving a sufticient opening between -18 and 19 for the ribbon20 to pass sfreely. The ribbon 20 is then pulled first one way and thenthe other,v thereby rolling the tobacco into proper Shape for the cigarette. During this process the brake 21 is applied to the rlbbon with such force as may be necessary to roll the tobacco hard or leave it comparatively loose as may be desired. When the tobacco has been rolled suificiently the ribbon is drawn away from the operator till the end next the o-perator extends just sufliciently far through the split plate '19 to permit of its being easily again. The non-gummed edge of a gummed cigarette paper is then inserted between the split plate 19 and thebar member 16 with the gummed side of the paper turned towards the operator. The ribbon 20 is then pulled toward the operator, which action causes the cigarette paper to be drawn into the machine until just the gummed edge of the paper protrudes above the split plate 19. The gum is then moistened and the ribbon member 20 pulled toward the operator until the cigarette is completely rolled andmade. The lid member 18 is then opened to allowth'e cigarette as made to come out.

The ends of the ribbon member 20 mav be equipped with ornamental metal coverings to prevent tearing or other damage to the ends of the ribbon member 20.

As many changes could-be made in the above construction and many apparently widely different embodiments of my invention within the scope of the claims "constructed without departing from the spirit or scope thereof, it is intended that all matter contained in the accompanying specifications and drawings shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.

What I claim as my invention is:

1.. A cigarette making device comprising a channel shaped body member provided with extended end portions connected vby a plurality of rods and having an opening to one side, a lid member pivotally mounted on one of said rods and adapted to provide a space between the lid member and 'the body, a split plate clamped adjustably t'o the lid member to act as ribbon guide,

and stop,

a brake member pivotally mounted on one grasped to pull it back.

. through whereby of'the rods connectingsaid endV w portions, a ribbon member of' flexible inaterial arranged to pass through the split plate into the chamber formed by the body member and the lid member, then out and over the body member, then under one of the before mentioned rods and over the brakemember and'operated by a pull upon the ribbon, substantially as set forth.

2. A clgarette making device comprising a channel shaped main body member having ends secured thereto which extend outside of the channel and connected thereto by means of a plurality of rods, a channel shaped lid member mounted pivotally on one of the said rods in such manner that the openings of the body member and thel lid member are facing one another, .thereby forming an Operating chamber with an opening between the said main body mem- 'ber and said lid member along the pivotal line, a split plate ribbon guide member with extended end portions` to act as stops adjustably mounted on the upper turned back edge of the lid member, a. ribbon member passing through said split plate guide then through an opening between the upper edges of the main body member and 'lid member into the Operating chamber forming a loop .therein, then out through the same opening over the upper edge of' the main body member, under or over one of the before mentioned rods and operated by pulling the ribbon member in either direction, substantially as set forth.

3. A cigarette making device comprising a channel shaped body member having ends secured lthereto by a plurality of rods, a lid member of channel Shape, the upper flange being bent outwardly and carryin'g a ribbon guide member with' stop portions secured thereto,

the lower fiange having a bead for one of the mentioned rods to pass the lid member is pivot'ed some distance from the adjacent edge of the body member, between the end portions of said body member, a brake member pivotally mounted on one of the before mentioned rods and operatedv by finger pressure, a non-elastic ribbon member of fiexible material having finger pieces attached to its ends and arranged to pass through the guide portion and over or under one of the rods before ment-ioned and then over the brake member and operated by pulling` the ribbon member in one direction or the other.
