Abstract

2092. Williams, H. E. Jan. 28. Variable-speed gearing ; cranks ; screw-and-nut mechanism.-Relates to variable gearing suitable for motor-vehicles, of the type in which a variablethrow crank is an essential element. Power may be communicated to the driving-shaft A of the gear through either of two gear. elements A<1>, A<2>. The wheel A<1> carries round with it guides A<3> supporting a sliding plate A<4> which carries a crank-pin B of variable throw. The eccentric position of the pin B is regulated by actuating the plate A' along in its guides by means of an eccentric-rod C<2> extending from an eccentric C<1> which may be rotated relatively to the shaft A for changing speed. The pin B is connected through radial links B<2> and cranks B<5> to ratchet-mounted pinions K which drive a central sleeve L continuously in one direction. The sleeve L drives a shaft P in either direction through bevel-gearing and a clutch. The eccentric C<1> is mounted on a spindle C inside the shaft A, and turned relatively thereto while the whole is in motion by the screw-and-nut mechanism shown on the left of Fig. 1, and in Fig. 5. An element G, which may be rotated to change the gear, screws upon a fixed part Z, and engages lugs E<2> projecting through slots in the part Z from a non-rotating but slidable two-part member E. The member E encloses a rotatable nut D which has webs D<3> extending through slots in the shaft A to a central portion which screws on a rapid thread on the shaft C. Turning the element G slides the nut D longitudinally, and effects the required relative motion of the spindle C and shaft A.
