Now it is obvious that the direct connection between the sleeve and spindle must be severed before the back gears are brought into play, and vice versa'. We have provided means for accomplishing both of these mperations in the proper order and times. rllhis means consists of a hand lever N carried by a stud a also carrying oppositely extending bifurcated arms n and n2. The arm n is provided with a shoe n3 engaging the groove fm. in the spool M The arm n2 has a shoe a* engaging the groove p in a collar l? fixed to the shaft K. By reason of this construction, the swinging of the lever N slightly to the right, Fig. 2, will shift the spool M to the right so asto bring its clutch member m into operative engagement with the gear L which'is the clutch member Z on fast onv the spindle, thus throwing in the direct or open drive. lt will be noted that in this position of the paris, the gear la is out of mesh with the gear L; Now if the leverN is swung to the left, Fig. 2, the spool M will be shifted to the left and the lgear 7: and shaft K will be shifted to the right with the result that the clutch member m will be [irst separated from the clutch member Z and 'the gear 7c will then be brought into mesh with the gear L, thus throwing out the direct or open drive and throwing in the indirect or back gear drive. This back gear 7 drive from the sleeve to the spindle is throughy ear e", gear 7n, bushing k2, shaft K, gear c', and gear L.
Having thus described our invention what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:
l. The combination with a spindle, of a 'sleeve loose thereon, means to drive the sleeve, a clutch member fast on.. the spindle, a supplemental clutch member' splined on the sleeve, whereby the spindle may be driven directly from the sleeve,'means for indirectly driving the nspiindleo' from the sleeve including agear fast on the spindle,
. a back gear shaft mounted to slide in 'its bearings, a gear fast thereon and adapted t0 mesh with the gea-r` which is fast on the spindle, constantly intermeshing gears on the sleeve and backgear shaft, and means `for shifting the clutch member on the sleeve and for moving they back gear shaft axially.
2. The, combination with a spindle, of a sleeve loose thereon, means to drive the sleeve, a gearffast on the spindle, a clutch member on said gear, a supplemental clutch member splined on the sleeve, whereby the theshaftf mesh with the gear L the whole shaftfspindle'may be driven directly from the 'sleev e, 'i
n means for indirectly driving the spindle from the sleeve including the gear fast on the spindle, a back gear shaft. mounted to slide in its bearings, a. gear fast there-- on and adaplted to mesh with the gear which is fast on t e spindle, constantly intermeshing gears on the sleeve and back gear shaft. and means for shifting the clutch member on the sleeve and for moving the back gear shaft axially.
3, The combination with a spindle, of a sleeve loose thereon, means to drive the sleeve, a clutch member fast on the spindle, a supplemental clutch member splined on the sleeve, whereby the spindle may be driven directly from the sleeve, means for indirectly driving the spindle from the sleeve including a gear fast on the spindle, a back gear shaft mounted to slide in its bearings, a gear fast thereon and adapted to mesh with the gear which is fast on vthe spindle, gear on the sleeve, a second gear mounted on the back gear shaft to turn therewith, but held against axial movement with the same so as to constantly mesh with the gear on the sleeve, and means for shifting the moving the back gear shaft axially.
4. The combination with a spindle, sleeve loose ,thereon sleeve, a clutch member fast to the spindl, a supplemental clutch member splined on the sleeve, whereby the spindle may be driven directl from the sleeve, means for indirectly driving the spindle from the sleeve including a gear fast on the spindle,
a back gear shaft mounted to slide 1n its' bearings, a gear fast thereon and adapted to mesh with the gear which is fast on the spindie, a ear on the sleeve, a second gear mounte on the back gear shaft and constantly in mesh with the gear on the sleeve a bushing inte osed between said shaft a second gear t ereon, said bushing being keyed to said secondgear and splined to the back shaft, and moans for shifting the clutch member on the sleeve and for moving the back 'Rar shaft axially.

7. The combination with a spindle, of a sleeve loose thereon, means to drive the sleeve. supplemental clutch members on the spindle and sleeve, one of said clutch members being movable to and from the other, a gear fast on the spindle, a back gear shaft mounted to slide axially in its bearings, a gear fast on said shaft and adapted to mesh with the gear on the spindle, constantly intermeshing gears on the sleeve and s aft, an intermediately pivoted lever oerativelv connected at one end to the mova le clutc and at the other end to the back gear shaft, and means connected directly to said lever for swinging the same, whereby the clutch will be moved in one direction and the shaft in the opposite direction.
8. The combination with a spindle, of u sleeve loose thereon, means to drive the sleeve, supplemental clutch members on the spindle and sleeve, one of said clutch members being movable to and from the other, a gear fast on the spindle, a back gear shaft mounted to slide axially in its bearings, a gear fast on said shaft and adapted to mesh with the gear on the spindle, constantly intermeshing gears on the sleeve and shaltt, an intermediately pivoted lever operatively connected at one end to the movable clutch and at the other end to the back gear shaft, and means connected directly to said lever for swinging the same, whereby the clutch will be moved in one direction and the shaft in the opposite direction, the pivot of said lever being arranged nearer the end which is connected to the clutch in order to give a greater movement to the shaft than to said clutch.
